The academic community of the University of Seville's School of Engineering deeply regrets the passing of Professor of Applied Mathematics Jorge Galán Vioque, a professor of applied mathematics. Jorge has been a professor at the ETSi for 30 years, since joining the Department of Applied Mathematics II as a teaching assistant, where he obtained a full professor position in 2010. Previously, he taught at the Carlos III University of Madrid.

He was also deputy director of research in his department from 2002 to 2008, and deputy director of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Seville (IMUS) from 2008 to 2016, where he was part of the teams led by Luis Narváez and Justo Puerto. He played a substantial role in the establishment and launch of the Institute. In particular, he played a key role in the acquisition of the first IMUS supercomputer and its subsequent management. He was currently a faculty member representing Sector A of the School. As a researcher, he has worked in various areas such as the study of the astronomical n-body problem, numerical and bifurcation continuation, the design of guidance and control algorithms for advanced satellite applications, and computational fluid mechanics.

During his research career, he completed several stays at the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Technology at the University of Bristol, the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, etc. In addition to some 60 publications in top-tier international journals, he gave numerous presentations at national and international conferences, demonstrating his outstanding communication skills.

It is worth highlighting Jorge's role in establishing scientific relationships between the Dynamical Systems Research Group at the University of Seville, of which he was a member, and leading international centers and departments in the field of Dynamical Systems.

Jorge led several national research projects, supervised four doctoral theses, and participated in the ERASMUS student mobility program and in doctoral student stays at the University of Bristol. He also organized several conferences and workshops at the University of Seville, where he also directed numerous multidisciplinary final and final master's thesis projects focused on the use of mathematics in engineering.

He also carried out numerous Knowledge Transfer actions to the industrial sector through collaborations with technology companies in the Renewable Energy and Aeronautics sectors. In the Renewable Energy area, he worked through public/private funding projects in Concentrated Solar Power with companies such as Abengoa Solar New Technologies, Promat-Etex group, Capsun Technologies BlueSolar, Sunntics, Virtualmechanics, etc., and collaborated with university research groups in diverse areas such as: Energy Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis, and Mechanical Engineering. In Aeronautics, more specifically optimizing the use of satellites, he collaborated with the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the ETSI for companies such as Indra, Taitus Software, and Deimos Space.

Although his academic merits have been numerous, above all, Jorge stood out for his human qualities, his ability to establish international relations, his entrepreneurial capacity, his decisive and courageous character regarding new research topics and innovative projects that led him to regularly face new scientific challenges. Jorge was

A born optimist, always willing to see the solvable side of problems and help in their resolution.

Jorge enjoyed his hobbies. A lover of sailing and paddle tennis, he will be remembered as a great person, a very friendly and cordial person who always treated his colleagues, students, and collaborators with exquisite care. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Pilar, his daughters, Lucía and Teresa, his son, Jorge, and his two grandchildren, Niklas and Olivia, whom he adored.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Jorge, sit tibi terra levis, rest in peace.
