Alejandro Lopez Ortega

Researcher in the Electric Propulsion group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory

After completing his Aeronautical Engineering degree at the Higher Technical School of Engineering in Seville Alejandro López Ortega earned a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (2008-2009), followed by doctoral studies at the same institution (2009-2013). In June 2013, he joined NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Electric Propulsion group. The group's mission is to develop and test new ion propulsion technologies that enable missions such as Dawn (the first spacecraft to orbit two asteroids) and Psyche (a new mission to study the asteroid of the same name, one of the oldest in the solar system). They are also working on developing high-power systems (over 100 kW) that would allow the use of electric propulsion in crewed missions in the near future.

The Higher Technical School of Engineering provided me with a strong technical foundation, to the point that I felt fully prepared to pursue a master's degree at one of the world's most prestigious technical/scientific universities. My time at the school also allowed me to enter the professional world and have enriching experiences, such as my Erasmus exchange at the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space in Toulouse
