Vantus
VANTUS - Unmanned Aerial Vehicle of the University of Seville
The VANTUS team, acronym for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle of the University of Seville, is a university organization based at the Higher Technical School of Engineering of Seville, made up of a group of students with the objective of participating in international aeromodelling competitions by designing, building and flying light radio-controlled aircraft or RPAS.
Currently in its second year of formal activity, VANTUS collaborates with 30 undergraduate and master's students, and is supported by a professor who serves as Team Advisor and associate professor, acting as a consultant to the team. Organized into four technical departments covering all areas of aircraft design and two support departments, the team debuted in July 2023 with its first self-built prototype, the Jaleo I.
With it, they achieved sixth place in the 2023 XtraChallenge, the first national championship. The flight of the Jaleo I demonstrated that a group of students from this school managed to design, manufacture, and pilot an aircraft from scratch, learning everything necessary along the way over the course of a year.
For the 2023/2024 season, the team is preparing to participate in the Air Cargo Challenge 2024, the European championship held in Aachen.
VANTUS is much more than a university project: it is the collective dream of a group of students from the University of Seville who have decided to go beyond the classroom to design, build and fly unmanned aircraft.
Born out of the Higher Technical School of Engineering, this multidisciplinary team combines precision, creativity, and innovation, integrating knowledge from engineering, management, marketing, and communication.
In their workshop, ideas are transformed into real prototypes, where every piece, every calculation, and every test reflects passion, effort, and teamwork.
VANTUS began with just 15 students, and today it has 55 members from diverse fields of knowledge.
The team is organized into four technical departments—structure, aerodynamics and stability, systems, and flight dynamics—and two organizational areas: marketing and cost management.
Furthermore, they have the support of a Team Advisor professor and another associate professor as a guide, and both undergraduate and master's students participate, which makes the project a true collaborative learning laboratory.
Their debut came in 2023, at the XtraChallenge, the first national student aeromodelling championship, where they proved that talent and motivation can fly as high as their drones.
Beyond technical results, VANTUS teaches values: the importance of leadership, communication, organization, and creativity.
These are soft skills, which are as valuable in today's job market as technical knowledge itself.
In Tesis, we meet this group of young people who design, create and fly from Seville, building much more than aircraft: a future that takes off with enthusiasm, science and teamwork.
