The Shanghai Ranking 2025 highlights the US's Engineering knowledge area

The 2025 Shanghai Ranking by Subject consolidates the University of Seville (US) as one of the leading universities in the field of engineering, with a strong international presence. This prestigious ranking places the US in the world's Top 500 in a total of 19 disciplines, with improvements in four areas globally and thirteen nationally. Among these, several areas taught and developed at the Higher Technical School of Engineering (ETSi) , reaffirming its role as a strategic hub for research and training excellence.

“Automation & Control”, national leader and in the world Top 100

Automation & Control discipline stands out as one of the key factors in the University of Seville's ranking, placing it in the 76-100 range globally and achieving first place nationally, making it the leading university in Spain in this area, strongly linked to the applied research and technological development that characterizes the ETSI (School of Engineering).

Seven Engineering disciplines among the best in the world

Engineering is the field of knowledge with the most outstanding disciplines at the University of Seville. In total, seven areas have reached the world's Top 500 , six of which are among the top 300 globally . This performance demonstrates the strength of the research groups and training programs at the School of Engineering (ETSI).

In addition to their leadership in Automation & Control, they also stand out in:

  • Instruments Science & Technology , 2nd position nationally and Top 151–200 worldwide .

  • Electrical & Electronic Engineering , ranked 2–3 nationally and also in the Top 151–200 worldwide .

  • Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering , ranked in the 201-300 range globally.

  • Energy Science and Engineering , in the 301-400 range.

Methodology based on research excellence

The Shanghai Ranking assesses university performance based on research-related indicators: publications in first-quartile (Q1) journals, normalized citation impact (CNCI), international collaboration (IC), and high-quality scientific output (Top). It also considers prestigious accolades such as Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, highly cited researchers (HCR), editors-in-chief of international journals, and leadership positions in global academic organizations.

The indicators are based on data from 2020–2024 and cover a total of 57 subjects grouped into Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences .

Internationally recognized scientific leadership

This excellent position is also bolstered by the international recognition of ETSi researchers. In recent years, three of its professors—Leopoldo García Franquelo, José Ignacio León, and Sergio Vázquez—have been named Highly Cited Researchers , a key indicator of the global impact of their scientific output. Furthermore, a large group of professors from the School have once again been recognized on the prestigious list compiled by Stanford University , which identifies the world's most influential researchers based on the impact of their publications. All of this reinforces the University of Seville's engineering program's position in the Shanghai Ranking and demonstrates the ETSi's significant contribution to its international standing.

A boost for the ETSI and for the international projection of the US

The results of the Shanghai Ranking 2025 reinforce the role of the ETSI as a hub of scientific and technological innovation in Andalusia and Spain. The prominent presence of its engineering disciplines in leading national and international positions underscores the impact of the work carried out by its research groups and the quality of its academic programs.

With seven engineering areas in the world's Top 500 — and several of them in elite positions — the School continues to consolidate itself as a benchmark in advanced training, technology transfer and generation of high-impact knowledge.
