Engineering drives the University of Seville's 49-position jump in the Shanghai Ranking

Publication date

The recent publication of Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026The Shanghai Ranking places the University of Seville at position 437, a jump of 49 places compared to the previous edition. Engineering at the University of Seville is one of the highest-ranked fields of knowledge, with seven disciplines in the top 500, six of them among the top 300. The contribution of the Higher Technical School of Engineering (ETSi) is particularly noteworthy in this result, both for its research activity and the strength of the engineering areas it develops, as well as for the international reach of its researchers.

The University of Seville is in the 401-500 range of the Shanghai Ranking for the third consecutive year, reaching position 437 this year, compared to 486 in 2025. Nationally, the institution has risen to eighth position among Spanish universities, compared to tenth the previous year, and maintains its second position among Andalusian universities.

One of the main factors that explain this evolution is the increase recorded in the indicator relating to highly cited researchers, whose score for the US practically doubles, going from 6.6 to 12.7 points.

The ETSi makes a particularly significant contribution to this progress, since the three researchers in the area of Electronic Technology highlighted among the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 of the University of Seville belong to the Department of Electronic Engineering, whose headquarters are located in the School: Leopoldo García Franquelo, José Ignacio León Galván and Sergio Vázquez Pérez.

The presence of these three researchers among the most cited scientists internationally reflects the relevance of the research developed at ETSi in strategic areas of electronic engineering, automation, control and energy conversion and management systems, areas closely linked to both the scientific activity of the School and the degrees taught there.

Engineering, among the areas with the greatest international presence at US

The contribution of Engineering to the international standing of the University of Seville is particularly evident in the Shanghai Ranking by discipline. Of the 19 areas of knowledge in which the University of Seville ranks among the top 500 in the world, seven belong to the field of Engineering, making it the area with the most disciplines represented in this group.

Furthermore, six of these seven Engineering disciplines are among the top 300 in the world, highlighting the international dimension of the research developed in this field.

Among them, Automation & Control stands out, reaching the global TOP100 and the top position nationally. Similarly, Instruments Science & Technology ranks in the global TOP151-200 and holds the second position nationally, while Electrical & Electronic Engineering appears in the TOP151-200 and achieves the second-third position among Spanish universities.

These results are directly related to areas of knowledge with a significant presence at the ETSI and to scientific and technological fields that are part of its teaching and research activities. The School provides training in disciplines related to electronic, automation and control engineering, electricity, energy, industrial technologies, telecommunications, aerospace engineering, industrial organization, environmental engineering, and other engineering areas, creating an academic and scientific ecosystem that connects the training of highly qualified professionals with research and knowledge transfer.

The strength of these areas is also reflected in the School's ability to develop research in strategic technologies, from power electronics and electrical and energy systems to automation, control, digitalization and advanced technologies applied to industry and the energy transition.

Research, training and talent in engineering

The subject-specific rankings published at the end of 2025 by this same ranking already placed the University of Seville among the leading international institutions in these areas. Specifically, in addition to Automation & ControlElectrical & Electronic Engineering, which was in the world's TOP100, and Instruments Science & Technology were in the TOP151-200.

Therefore, the University of Seville's ranking in the Shanghai Ranking highlights the close relationship between the quality and impact of research and the international standing of universities. In the case of Engineering, this relationship is reflected in the activity of research groups and departments that conduct internationally recognized research and, at the same time, participate in training the professionals required by society's technological transformation.

The contribution of the ETSi therefore extends from the generation of high-impact scientific knowledge to its incorporation into teaching and its transfer to the productive fabric, in areas such as industrial digitization, automation, electronics, energy, sustainable mobility, artificial intelligence, communications, advanced industry or the energy transition.

The Higher Technical School of Engineering, through its departments, research groups, degrees and collaboration with companies and institutions, is part of this ecosystem of knowledge generation and transfer that helps to place the University of Seville among the leading academic institutions in different areas of Engineering on an international scale.
