"Let children come to science": ETSI fosters Stem vocations from an early age
Last Friday, May 30, 2025, the CEIP Santiago Ramón y Cajal of the Cordoba town of Puente Genil, had the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience thanks to the visit to the Higher Technical School of Engineering (ETSI) of the University of Seville. This activity is part of the ETSI commitment to bring science and engineering to new generations from an early age, thus promoting interest in Stem degrees and promoting an early link with the university environment.
The ETSI has been promoting educational initiatives that arouse scientific vocations from even early ages, transmitting the message that science is available to everyone. This was understood by the CEIP Santiago Ramón y Cajal, which began its course with the motto “This course is a tip”, dedicated to Japanese culture, and that did not hesitate to add this scientific experience to its enriching educational project.
The visit was born thanks to the enthusiasm of teachers and families after attending the Arcytan Conference that ETSI had organized last November 2024. After contacting the students' deputy director, Carmen Hernández Mancera, the visit came true. Through a voluntary test based on a battery of 122 questions about science and technology, the 35 most motivated students were selected among the 3rd to 6th grade courses, who lived with emotion every step of the process.
During the day, the children participated in telecommunications, physical and aerospace workshops, used virtual reality glasses, learned key scientific concepts, and marveled in the wind tunnel. This experience not only reinforced his interest in science, but also showed that effort and motivation are learning engines beyond the academic file.
The visit to the workshops and laboratories of the ETSI was possible thanks to the collaboration of teachers Irene Fondón, Sergio Esteban and Alberto Casado who made them practical demonstrations linked to science and technology, so that they could see how these aspects are fundamental for the daily activities that are carried out in our society.
From the CEIP Santiago Ramón y Cajal they have deeply thanked the ETSI and their entire human team for opening its doors and their hearts, demonstrating that science is also taught from emotion and closeness. An experience that will undoubtedly mark a before and after in the life of these little big dreamers.
