Relatives of Emilio Gómez González received the Medal of the City of Seville awarded posthumously by the Seville City Council

The City Council of Seville presents the Medal of the City of Seville to the relatives of Emilio Gómez González

Yesterday, the Seville City Council presented the recognitions on the occasion of San Fernando Day in gratitude for the work of people and entities that have contributed to the coexistence and progress of the city in different areas. 

The relatives of the ETSi Professor , Emilio Gómez González, received this distinction for his figure and career  posthumously. Professor Gómez González was a doctor in Physics and professor of Applied Physics at the University of Seville, where he founded in 2001 - and directed until his death - the Interdisciplinary Physics Group (GFI). His research activity revolved around the design, development and implementation of optical and neurophotonic technologies for non-invasive and image-guided surgery in Neurosurgery and Fetal Surgery; diagnostic aid systems and personalized medicine in Hepatology, Radiology, Neurology and other medical areas; and optical architectures for augmented reality and 2D and 3D visualization. As a result of the pandemic situation experienced worldwide, Gómez González dedicated great efforts to researching the development of technology that would allow COVID-19 to be detected on surfaces. This fact caused him to be awarded the Cross of Police Merit with White Badge at the request of the TEDAX-NRBQ Group of the National Police. For more than twenty years he collaborated with the Andalusian Health Service in pioneering research on high technological training. At the same time, he collaborated with the HUMAINT Project of the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission in researching the social aspects of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence in the field of health. Among his numerous publications in scientific journals, those related to the field of 'Applied Optics and Photonics' and 'Plasma Ball' stand out, as well as the guide to learning about digital photography cameras that has been used so much by photography imaging professionals. facing its transfer from the analogue to the digital world.

What is light for? Tribute to Emilio Gómez González, was an act in memory and recognition of the professor who sadly died in January 2023, in which his co-workers, the research group, his family and friends participated.  

This event, which was chaired by the Rector of the University of Seville, Miguel Ángel Castro Arroyo, and which was attended by the Director of the ETSi, Andrés Sáez Pérez, was held on the day prior to the delivery to his family of the Medal of the City of Seville awarded posthumously by the Seville City Council. 

The tribute included the participation of Mª Isabel Gómez González, Emilio's sister, to remember her time as a student and the vision from her family; Consuelo Bellver Cebreros, professor and co-director of his doctoral thesis; Antonio González Fernández, director of the Department of Applied Physics III of the US and Emilio's colleague; Javier Márquez Rivas, neurosurgeon and Emilio's collaborator on his research team; Emilia Gómez Gutiérrez, researcher with a medal from the City of Seville, as a former student and recent collaborator.
