The academic community of the ETSi is deeply saddened by the death of its researcher and professor, Emilio Gómez González
The management of the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Seville, its faculty, students and administrative and service staff, deeply regret the passing of Professor and colleague Emilio Gómez González.
Professor Gómez González held a doctorate in Physics and was a professor of Applied Physics in the Department of Applied Physics III at the University of Seville , where he founded the Interdisciplinary Physics Group (GFI). in 2001 - and directed it until his death
His research activity revolved around the design, development and implementation of optical and neurophotonic technologies for non-invasive and image-guided surgery in Neurosurgery and Fetal Surgery; diagnostic support systems and personalized medicine in Hepatology, Radiology, Neurology and other medical areas; and optical architectures for augmented reality and 2D and 3D visualization.
As a result of the global pandemic, Professor Gómez González dedicated considerable effort to researching and developing technology to detect the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 on surfaces. This work led to him being awarded the Cross of Police Merit with White Distinction.
For over twenty years, he collaborated with the Andalusian Health Service, specifically with the Virgen del Rocío and Virgen Macarena hospitals in Seville, on pioneering, high-tech research that enabled the first-ever complex interventions in Spain and Europe. Simultaneously, he collaborated with Joint Research Centre (JRC) HUMAINT Project , investigating the social aspects of artificial intelligence-based technologies in healthcare.
Among his numerous publications in scientific journals, those related to the field of 'Applied Optics and Photonics' and 'Plasma Ball' stand out, as well as the guide to understanding digital photography cameras that has been so widely used by image professionals in their transition from the analog to the digital world.
Finally, we wish to highlight the affection and esteem that the entire academic community of the ETSi held for Emilio Gómez González, which is why this sad news has plunged us all into deep sorrow. May he rest in peace.
