Publication date

Seville is going to submit its candidacy to become the future headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency, thanks to the process of decentralization of state bodies that the Government of Spain is carrying out.

The people of Seville have until November 7th to support Seville's candidacy to host the Spanish Space Agency

The city, along with its metropolitan area, boasts a number of strengths and advantages stemming from its long-standing aeronautical industry tradition, as well as the commitment made in recent decades to the aerospace sector, both by the public and private sectors. The result is an ecosystem where infrastructure and innovation hubs, knowledge and talent, the business community, and the people can all play a crucial role in ensuring the success of locating the Space Agency in our city.

Benefits of the Spanish Space Agency for Seville

In addition to positioning Seville on the map of international aerospace development and research, with the resulting direct and indirect economic impact, employment will be one of the main benefits that the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency will bring to Seville. The Agency will initially require approximately sixty employees, including civil servants, contract workers, and senior management positions. However, once the Agency's statutes are approved, the number of staff assigned to it may change depending on the final requirements and functions established.

Among the criteria the Commission will consider in choosing the venue are social and territorial cohesion, improvements in the functioning of public services, unemployment levels, and the fight against depopulation. Addressing these issues on Seville's agenda would benefit the city as a whole and, specifically, improve public transportation, including air travel and high-speed rail.

For its part, the hotel sector would also benefit, since the Commission values the existence of a hotel environment, close to the headquarters, that allows for the accommodation of institutional and working visits.

In general, companies with operational establishments in the area that operate within the space sector will also benefit from the Spanish Space Agency's location in Seville. This includes companies with a high capacity for innovation that develop lines of business that could be incorporated into the processes and developments of a space program.

Similarly, initiatives from the main local public institutions to foster the development of a business ecosystem in the space sector, and those from research groups in areas of interest that could support innovative initiatives (quantum communication, space-based observation and communication payloads, new designs and components for space structures, positioning and airworthiness, secure space communications, launchers, and new materials), will work closely with the Agency. Research groups and public-private networks will also collaborate to promote projects related to any of the Agency's areas of interest, establishing direct contact with the Agency should it establish a presence in the city.

Seville is preparing a strong bid to become the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency, which would be a major boost for the entire sector and a crucial step for the industry. This bid is being developed thanks to the support of numerous public and private institutions. The support of professionals and the public will also be key in this process.
