25th Anniversary of Chemical Engineering at the ETS of Engineering of the US
The Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Seville has celebrated the Inaugural Act of the program of activities that will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the start of the teaching of the Degree in Chemical Engineering (IQ) at the University of Seville.
The event, attended by over 200 people, was presided over by Andrés Sáez Pérez, Director of the Higher Technical School of Engineering at the University of Seville. Also present were Nieves Valenzuela Romero, Director General for the Promotion of Innovation of the Regional Government of Andalusia and a graduate of the second graduating class of the Chemical Engineering degree program at the Higher Technical School of Engineering. The coordinators of the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering, Mónica Rodríguez Galán and Ángel Villanueva Perales, as well as Francisco Campos García, President of the Alumni Association, also spoke.
The ETSi begins with this event the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Chemical Engineering Degree, which will take place throughout the 23/24 academic year. Among other activities, the program includes meetings of students from different graduating classes and faculty, talks and technical workshops in the field of Chemical Engineering, a sector-specific trade fair fostering student-industry collaborations, the 5th Environment Conference within the framework of World Environment Day (June 5, 2024) entitled: “Chemical Engineering and Sustainability,” and the 7th Congress on Innovation in Chemical Engineering Teaching (CIDIQ), which will be held between September 23 and 25, 2024, and will serve as the closing event for the 25th Anniversary.
25 years of history and professionals
The Higher Technical School of Engineering (ETSi) was created in December 1963 by Decree Law 3608/63 under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In July 1965, experts from the OECD made their first visit to Seville to discuss the new curriculum to be taught at the School. Teaching activities for the Industrial Engineering degree began a year later, in September 1966, and the School was officially inaugurated in April 1967.
The Chemical Engineering degree (Plan 98) was introduced at the ETSI in the 1998-1999 academic year, graduating approximately 600 students over 11 cohorts. The adaptation of university education to the European Higher Education Area led to the transformation of the Chemical Engineering degree into Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering, which were implemented at the ETSI in the 2010-11 and 2014-15 academic years, respectively. Since then, 10 cohorts of Bachelor's students and 8 cohorts of Master's students have graduated, totaling 386 students.
Currently, the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering have the collaboration of 4 Company Chairs: CEPSA Energy Foundation Chair, Chair of Waste Management in the Circular Economy (Aborgase), Inerco Chair, Water Chair (Emasesa) in addition to the agreement with Flacema.
The broad versatility of the training provided to graduates of the Chemical Engineering degree at ETSi makes them a professional profile widely in demand by industry both nationally and internationally, as demonstrated by the wide variety of companies that have these professionals on their staff: Ayesa, CEPSA, REPSOL, Atlantic Copper or P&G are some of them.
