Professor Antonio Torralba receives the FAMA University of Seville Award
Antonio Torralba Silgado, Professor of Electronic Engineering at the University of Seville, received the Fama 2024-25 Award in the Engineering and Architecture category on September 11th from Miguel Ángel Castro Arroyo , Rector of the same university, for his outstanding career and his work in knowledge transfer.
Head of the Electronic Engineering group at the ETSi - Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Seville, associated with CERN, Professor Torralba has developed low energy consumption technological solutions, with a solid scientific output, direction of doctoral theses and numerous technology transfer projects in collaboration with public and private entities.
Antonio Torralba has conducted research stays at New Mexico State University and Texas A&M University, both in the USA. He leads the Electronic Engineering Research Group, which is a leader in the design of electronic circuits and systems, especially in the field of very low-power analog and mixed-signal microelectronics, where his contributions to the design of building blocks and their application to signal processing and conversion in communication circuits are particularly noteworthy.
The research group he leads was responsible for the common simulation platform for defining the digital terrestrial television (DVBT) standard. He has published over 250 articles in international journals and conferences and has participated in, and in many cases led, more than one hundred competitive projects, forty of which received international funding from various framework programs (including H2020, HE, Life, and CEF calls) and centers of excellence (including the European Space Agency - ESA and CERN). Representing the University of Seville, he participated in the creation of the pan-European research infrastructures LifeWatch ERIC and DANUBIUS, both listed in the ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) catalogue .
His efforts in knowledge transfer are noteworthy, having served as director of AICIA (Andalusian Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation) from 2004 to 2008 and having led over one hundred direct contracting projects with companies in the integrated electronics, communications, intelligent transport, and IoT sectors. The results of this transfer have led to commercial products such as integrated digital TV receivers, PLC modems, and systems for remote meter reading and the monitoring and control of electric vehicles.
