ARUS completes its journey in the Hungarian Formula Student after a battle against time and weather
Andalucía Racing Team, the US motorsport team, has competed on one of the most classic circuits on the Formula 1 calendar: the Hungaroring
The motorsport team based at the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Seville, Andalucía Racing Team, participated in its second event of the season: Formula Student East. This competition takes place in the Hungarian city of Budapest on the track of one of the most classic circuits on the Formula 1 calendar: the famous Hungaroring circuit.
The members of the University of Seville racing team have arrived in Hungary after a week of intensive training at the Jerez Circuit, where their goal was to maximize the performance of their new single-seater, the ART23-E, in order to surpass the results obtained in their most recent competition, Formula Students Netherlands. It's worth noting that at the Assen circuit in the Netherlands, the University of Seville team, based at the School of Engineering, achieved their first-ever top-10 finish in the Design Event.
Success despite the weather
Once in the pits, the team set to work on the technical inspections required by Formula Student beforehand, in order to participate in the dynamic tests of the competition. These inspections, which meticulously analyze every aspect of the vehicle, were anything but easy to pass. Already very strict to ensure the car's safety, the ARUS team had to contend with an unexpected opponent: the weather. A series of storms, which violently battered Hungary and other Central European countries, wreaked havoc on the Hungaroring and its surroundings, bringing track activity to a halt for several hours and substantially reducing the time ARUS had available to complete the inspections and run on the track during the practice sessions. Fortunately, the inspections were a complete success, and the ART23-E was able to complete the Auto-X, Skidpad, and Endurance tests. Meanwhile, the static tests proceeded without incident.
Next goal: Formula Student Germany
On August 6th, the Endurance race, the week's main event, took place. The ART23-E completed 23 of the 28 laps before a red flag forced the marshals to stop the race following an accident on the track. While the marshals worked to secure the track, the ARUS team decided to withdraw from the race for safety reasons after discovering a mechanical problem with the battery.
Pending the publication of the official results, the Seville team heads into Formula Student East with a single objective in mind: to arrive at the final event of the season, Formula Student Germany, as prepared as possible. This competition will take place between August 14th and 20th.
The first electric car from an established team
This year, ARUS' electric single-seater incorporates numerous new features aimed at creating a highly competitive electric car, enabling them to tackle the challenge of developing the first Andalusian electric and autonomous car in the Driverless category.
The ARUS team, made up of students from various departments of the University of Seville, was founded in 2012 at the ETSI (School of Engineering) and has been steadily progressing ever since. Just one year after its creation, it had its first single-seater on the track, becoming the first Andalusian team to compete in Formula Student. In 2018, the team designed and built its first electric model.
