This course aims to review the devices, systems, and tools that current technology offers to
electricity system managers to make their daily operations more flexible, allowing them to accommodate more
renewable energy without increasing the risk of blackouts. The first day will be dedicated to power electronics devices
(grid forming converters, STATCOMS, HVDC systems), as well as virtual power plants
(VPPs), still new to Spain, and microgrids, essential in countries with fragile transmission systems.
The second day will address the challenges of control systems, both for distribution networks and
renewable energy plants, as well as the need for grid codes adapted to the new era. The course will
conclude with a roundtable discussion reflecting on how the future operation of the
electricity system, far more complex than it was at the end of the 20th century, should be structured.
The course is aimed at final-year engineering students and professionals, as well as anyone interested in
energy economics and regulation.
