Flexibility in Decarbonized Electrical Systems
Course "Flexibility in decarbonized electrical systems"
Organized by the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), the "Flexibility in Decarbonized Electrical Systems" course will be held on October 23 and 24 at Endesa's Corporate Headquarters in Seville.
The electricity system has been undergoing a profound transformation in recent decades due to the urgent and necessary decarbonization of society. This paradigm shift is not simple, as the planning and operation of decarbonized electricity systems presents a significant technological challenge for numerous reasons: the use of renewable energy sources with non-firm capacity, increased demand due to the electrification of end-use energy, limitations in the construction of new electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, and so on. Consequently, the electricity system will be subject to greater volatility in both generation and consumption. For these reasons, it will be impossible to maintain current standards of quality, efficiency, and security of electricity supply in the near future if appropriate measures are not implemented today. Flexibility, understood as the capacity of the electricity system to cope with variability and uncertainty in generation, demand, and network availability, is crucial for successfully undertaking this energy transition process.
This course aims to review the various technologies that can bring flexibility to the electricity system from a technological perspective: the role of energy storage, demand management, the contribution of conventional and renewable generation, and the use of power electronics devices. The adoption of different technologies depends on the specific problem to be solved, so it is essential to understand the flexibility needs of transmission and distribution network operators, as well as the current and anticipated regulatory framework. The course also incorporates two international case studies on the application of flexibility tools in the United States and China, which can undoubtedly be applied in the European context.
The course is aimed at final-year students and professionals in engineering, economics and the environment.
