Flexibility in Decarbonized Electrical Systems

Course "Flexibility in decarbonized electrical systems"

Organized by the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), the Course "Flexibility in Decarbonized Electrical Systems" will be taught on October 23 and 24 at the Endesa Corporate Headquarters in Seville.

The electrical system has been undergoing a profound transformation in recent decades due to the urgent and necessary decarbonization of society. This paradigm shift is not easy, since the planning and operation of decarbonized electrical systems is a technological challenge for a multitude of reasons: use of renewable energy sources with non-firm power, increase in demand due to the electrification of end uses of the energy, limitation in the construction of new transportation and distribution infrastructures of electrical energy, etc. In this way, the electrical system will be subject to greater volatility in both generation and consumption. For these reasons, it will be impossible to maintain the quality, efficiency and security standards of the electricity supply in the near future if appropriate measures are not articulated today. Flexibility, understood as the ability of the electrical system to cope with variability and uncertainty in generation, demand and network availability, is crucial to successfully undertake this energy transition process.

This course aims to review the different technologies that can provide flexibility in the electrical system from a technological point of view: the role of energy storage, demand management, the contribution of conventional and renewable generation, as well as the use of power electronic devices. The adoption of different technologies depends on the problem to be solved, so it is necessary to have a vision of the flexibility needs of the transport and distribution network operators, as well as the current and expected regulatory framework in the future. . The course additionally incorporates two international experiences in the application of flexibility tools in the United States and China that can undoubtedly be applied in the European context.

The course is aimed at final year students and professionals in engineering, economics and the environment.
